Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

I love snow. I think its wonderful. I just wish there was more of it! I decided that it was about time I bought some of it inside. So I made this cute little snow globe!

In fact, I made 4. Well, that’s not strictly true. I made 2 of them. My partner made the other 2, under my guidance. I made them using DAS white air dry clay.

I started by creating a disk of clay that was just smaller than the opening of the jar. I  then smoothed out the edges.

 
After this I buried 2 pipe brush trees into the clay, adding extra clay to secure them down.

Then, I constructed the snow man, using a cocktail stick to hold the pieces of the snowman together. I then left it to dry for about 30 hours.

The ticket time is only 24 hours to dry but I had to wait for my partner to return from work to complete them, so they got a bit longer!

When he returned, we added faces and buttons to the snowmen with Sharpies, then varnished them with Do Crafts Acrylic Glitter Varnish and glued them to the undersides of the lids.Once Dried, It was time to construct the actual globe! How exciting. For this, we filled a clean jar with baby oil, about 1/2 cm from the top of the jar. Then we added 3 tbsp of white glitter (make sure the flakes of glitter are large – on my first attmept we used fine glitter and instead of being pretty, the mixture of oil and glue turned to a fudgey mess!). Place the lid onto the jar, plunging the decorations into it. Ideally, there should be a little overflow. This will make sure that there are no air bubbles inside the jar. Screw it on tight and check for leakages. if you are really concerned about leakages, you can put a little hot glue around the edge of the lid before you screw it on, but I did not find that this was necessary.

And there we are! Aren’t they lovely! So festive and magical! To finish I wanted to use a circle of glitter fabric and some white and red twine but unfortumately I struggled to find a way to stick the fabric to the lid, and because it was quite thick it did not drape very nicely. So I just left it bare.
